You already know you will be stuck late.
There is a pitch deadline.
A model review.
A networking dinner.
Something on the calendar that tells you dinner will not happen normally.
The mistake is pretending it will.
That is how the day turns into coffee, a protein bar, random delivery, and then overeating at night because you barely ate enough earlier.
You need a late-day food plan.
Here is the simple version.
1. Eat a Real Lunch
On late workdays, lunch matters more.
If you know dinner will be delayed, do not go light at lunch.
A tiny salad, coffee, or snack is not enough to carry you through a long afternoon and evening.
You need something that actually holds you over.
That could be:
-
chicken and rice
-
turkey sandwich and fruit
-
eggs, toast, and fruit
-
steak or salmon with potatoes
The point is eating enough so you are not useless by 4 PM and starving by 8 PM.
A late day starts falling apart when lunch is too small.
2. Have One Backup Before You Need It
If you are stuck in the office late, do not wait until you are already starving to solve the problem.
Have one backup ready.
One.
Something simple you can keep at work, grab fast, or order quickly.
Examples:
-
protein shake
-
banana
-
protein bar
-
jerky
-
fruit
Because when you go from lunch to 9 PM with nothing real in between, dinner usually becomes whatever is fastest, biggest, and easiest.
The backup keeps you from walking into dinner completely out of control.
3. Decide Dinner Before the Day Gets Ugly
The worst time to choose dinner is 9:30 PM after a long finance day.
At that point, you are not making a thoughtful decision.
You are just trying to survive.
So decide earlier.
Before 5 PM, know what dinner will be.
Save two or three default delivery orders that you can repeat without thinking.
That might be:
-
a simple protein + rice meal
-
a sandwich with fruit or soup
-
a meal prep option already waiting at home
-
a default order from a place near your office
The exact meal matters less than the system.
You are removing the decision from the most exhausted part of the day.
That is the win.
The Bigger Point
Late workdays are not the problem.
Pretending they will be normal is the problem.
If you know the day will run late, plan food like it.
Real lunch.
One backup.
Dinner decided early.
That alone can prevent the classic finance pattern:
Coffee all day.
Too little food.
Low energy.
Late random delivery.
Overeating at night.
You need a simple system that works when the day does not.
